Local mining, construction, industrial, power generation and machine tool shows experience record turnout
Electra Mining Africa experienced its biggest show yet last week, with more than 41 000 visitors attending the show, up from 35 000 in 2006. Exhibitor space was sold out months ahead of the show, with more than 700 exhibitors taking stands from some 15 countries. This outstanding turnout indicates continued growth, development and economic interest in the local mining, construction, industrial and power generation industries, despite slowing economic growth in the country.
Both exhibitors and visitors were able to make valuable business connections, discussing the latest developments, technologies, trends, products and services in these sectors. Many of these new innovations were energy efficient and environmentally friendly products, as well as products in line with the mining industry’s goals on health and safety.
Furthermore, this year in Hall 9, co-locating Machine Tools Africa received excellent visitor attendance and exhibitors experienced a high level of sales and sales leads. The exhibition was fully sold out and was once again endorsed by the Machine Tool Merchants Association of South Africa. The last officially sanctioned show was held in 2004.
Visitors to Elenex Africa, the internationally respected leading power generation, electrical engineering and lighting exhibition in Africa, were introduced to many new services and products within this important arena, especially in today’s power critical environment.
"The broad scope of these shows brings these coinciding industry sectors together at one location for visitor and exhibitor convenience," says John Kaplan, Managing Director at Specialised Exhibitions, organisers of the shows. "It’s a platform to showcase the latest developments, technologies, trends, products and services in all sectors of these industries."
Organised by the South African Equipment Export Council, a delegation from Latin America, including mining companies from Peru and Mexico involved in the mining of lead, zinc, silver, gold and copper attended the event. An inward buying mission and exhibitor forum took place on Wednesday where the international delegates met with the best local capital equipment suppliers South Africa has to offer as they plan their capital equipment acquisitions for the next two years.
A second delegation from the Chamber of Mines in Argentina also attended the show, and met with their South African counterparts in an attempt to gain knowledge about the local mining industry and its legislation, methods of mining and governance.
"South Africa is at the core of the Southern African mining sector," says Director of International Market Development at the Canadian Association of Mining Equipment and Services for Export, Maurice Bichsel. "It has a large mining market and manufacturing capacity, but still imports much of its technology from overseas. This is why it is vital for overseas mining companies and equipment suppliers to attend Electra Mining as it is the best opportunity to gather information on the local market and to identify potential trends in the sector," says Bichsel.
The Mining Summit hosted by the Department of Minerals and Energy, which ran alongside Electra Mining on Tuesday and Wednesday, also provided a forum for issues affecting the industry to be discussed and dealt with. The theme of the summit was "Creating a conducive mining environment – Pursuing the paradigm shift," and was attended by many high profile decision makers in the industry.
"The mining industry continues to experience major growth with new ventures, expansions and upgrades, and with South Africa hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the country has embarked on major infrastructure projects that demand a massive input of supplies and machinery. This is good news for general industry beyond 2010, and for Electra Mining Africa," says John Kaplan, Managing Director for Specialised Exhibitions, organisers of Electra Mining Africa.
On the international calendar, Electra Mining Africa is ranked as the second largest mining show in the world and the biggest trade exhibition in southern Africa, and is a recognised gateway into Africa for local and global investors looking for new business opportunities in the mining, construction, industrial and power generation industries.

Energy efficient products to allay energy crisis
Recent developments in the South African electricity sector have resulted in all sectors of the economy having to become more energy efficient, and servicers of the South African mining, construction and power generation industries are looking to play their part.
One such company is Voith Turbo South Africa. In fact, the company will use Electra Mining Africa 2008 as a platform to illustrate its commitment to the supply of energy efficient products that assist industry to utilise energy cost effectively.
In line with the energy saving drive, Voith has increased the economy of single drives and realised the potential for energy savings with the introduction of the new world-wide patented TurboSyn friction turbo coupling. The TurboSyn combines the advantages of hydrodynamics and mechanical slip-free power transmission to offer numerous cost saving benefits, including lower energy requirements and more output. Voith’s TurboSyn friction turbo coupling will be amongst the products on display at the company’s stand at Electra Mining Africa 2008.
Another efficient energy pioneer is CMG Electric Motors South Africa, which is an Eskom approved preferred supplier of the 1.1kW to 90kW energy efficient motor range, and will display a comprehensive range of premium high efficiency electric motors at Electra Mining Africa 2008.
Eskom has devised a rebate system to encourage end-users to exchange older, less efficient motors for new units. By purchasing a new energy efficient IP66 motor, the purchaser can qualify for the Eskom subsidy calculated as a percentage of the original cost of the motor, bringing energy efficient motor prices on a par with those of standard motors.
Long standing global leader in bearing technology SKF is also providing solutions for the current power crisis in South Africa. The company has started a bearing remanufacturing facility in Jet Park which solves the problem of ever-increasing lead times for the acquisition of new large size bearings. Remanufacturing presents the best possible solution in terms of cost and lead time as bearings that are in service can be removed during planned maintenance shut down periods. The current energy crisis will also increase demand on remanufactured bearings as Eskom is planning to re-start “mothballed” power stations in order to increase power supply. The SKF team will also be on site at the show to supply details about its bearing remanufacturing facility.
SKF is just one of the global industry leaders which will be sharing its century of experience, technological know-how and product innovation at Electra Mining Africa 2008.
Another experienced industry leader, industrial gear technology and mechanical power transmission specialists, Hansen Transmissions, will again be exhibiting at its usual spot at the show.
This is the company’s ninth Electra Mining exhibition and the stand will feature a cross section of the company’s product range. In addition to the Hansen P4 large industrial gearbox, with torque ratings up to 1300 kNm, the modular M4 ACC (Air Cooled Condenser) helical gearbox, a cost effective and efficient solution for dry environments such as air-cooled steam condensation plants where water resources are scarce, will be on show. The Hansen M4 design incorporates the most modern techniques and proven Hansen P4 and M4 technology.
Also on show, will be the Hansen (I4) Invertible gearbox, designed by the company’s South African engineering team more than a decade ago and internationally accepted as standard for underground conveyor drives in the mining industry for the Hansen Transmissions Group.
But besides these experienced Electra Mining exhibitors, the show will also showcase some new names to look out for in the geological exploration and mining support industries on the African continent. Silvercross Helicopters has the most modern fleet on the continent and their R150-million rands worth of helicopter assets are all owner managed, providing an unparalleled alignment of interests between the client, the operator and the asset owners.
The protection of assets and safety are of paramount importance using their tried and tested Flight Safety Management System. All parties will experience meeting project objectives, whilst balancing cost effective and economical operations with quality assurance and safety.

New product launches at mining, construction, industrial and power generation shows
The South African market is due to see the introduction of a new line of static and portable screening and washing plants, as well as both jaw and impact crushers, as a result of a recent agreement giving Crushers International the exclusive agency to distribute the range of Terex-Simplicity and Lippmann-Milwaukee products to the African continent.
Terex-Simplicity based in Michigan, USA, manufactures both static and portable screening and washing plants. Lippmann-Milwaukee based in Wisconsin, USA manufacturers both jaw and impact crushers in static and portable configuration, in addition to a range of feeders, rip rap plants and portable C&D waste recycling plants.
The first Lippmann 3042 jaw crusher and a Terex-Simplicity portable material washing plant have arrived and will be on display at Electra Mining Africa 2008 in Johannesburg in early September.
A further agreement concluded between Kwa-Zulu Natal Company, Ilanga Steelphalt (trading as Super Brooms Africa) and Superior Brooms based in Wichita, Kansas City, US, will see the introduction of a new range of equipment into South Africa. Super Brooms Africa has been awarded the agency to distribute the Superior Brooms range of brooms throughout the African continent.
The deal has closed a gap that was previously evident in the market, as there was no local entity providing these particular types of brooms, or back up support.
According to Jan Van der Merwe, President of the Ilanga Group of companies: “As road construction and maintenance contractors, we have been using brooms for over 12 years now, and were acutely aware of the demand for an effective local representation to provide the market with timely back-up support and effective service gratification. In the past, this just simply wasn’t available”.
Unique exclusives agreed in the deal include rear suspension systems, one of the best sound suppressed cabs in the industry, a load compensated piston hydraulic system and an electronic brush control.
One of these machines will be on show at Electra Mining Africa 2008, where Super Brooms Africa will be combining with Crushers International to display their machines to market related attendees.
Amazwi Power Products, manufacturer of the Exdin range of scraper winches, will also be unveiling its latest model at the 2008 Electra Mining Africa exhibition. This model has no mechanical clutch, thus saving on expensive wearing replacement parts, but most importantly the machine can be operated from a remote position, providing maximum operator safety.
Double drum scraper winches are widely utilised in South African hard rock mines as a primary means of shifting ore from the mining face. They are tough robust machines designed and adapted for the extreme conditions encountered underground. Winch operators work in confined areas in close proximity to moving parts and have to cope with factors such as dust, high humidity, water, poor visibility, noise and rough handling. It is accepted that operating a winch can be potentially dangerous making the new Exdin model, which can be operated from a remote position, a real breakthrough for the industry.
Another new product that will be on show at Electra Mining Africa 2008 is the Reutech Radar Systems modern long-range movement and surveying radar, the MSR 300. Unrivalled in its class, the MSR 300 now offers continuous slope monitoring and surveying of rock surfaces up to a slant range of 2500m under all weather conditions.
The MSR 300 is capable of detecting sub-millimeter movement of the rock face at this range, whilst employing the most modern propriety technology which now eliminates the two major limitations experienced with radar-based displacement measurement systems to date. These limitations are caused by rapidly varying climatic conditions as well as slope movement that exceeds rates of more than 15mm from scan-to-scan. Both these conditions can lead to inaccurate measurements and consequently create false alarms that dramatically affect the performance of the system.
The MSR 300 offers the capability of tracking movements of up to 300mm from scan-to-scan as well as maintaining a high level of immunity to false alarms during sudden environmental changes such as rain, dust storms or mist formations.
The MSR 300 also offers significant improvement in the system’s surveying capability. The system now offers a range accuracy of better than 50mm on any specific point target, thereby allowing continuous real-time surveying of the area of interest under all weather conditions.
In addition, current users of the MSR 200 range will not be excluded from the new benefits as any MSR 200 can be upgraded at the user’s site within a day.
Electra Mining Africa, together with co-locating shows Elenex – Africa’s leading power generation, electrical engineering and lighting exhibition – and the Machine Tools Africa exhibition, will take place from 8-12 September at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, Nasrec, Gauteng.

The Verderflex DURA model has an ultra-compact construction, dramatically reducing required floor space by up to 70% and rigid pump housing designed for heat dispersion and strength. Due to the viscous nature of the products pumped by Verderflex peristaltic hose pumps, the range has been designed to provide much lower capital running costs. The pump has a ‘greased for life’ bearing and centrally absorbs the forces released in the pump, offering lower maintenance and a durable pump drive – ideal for the pumping of slurries, 80% solids, abrasives or viscous liquids.
International supplier of new CNC machinery Hurco recently launched a new range of machines with the main feature being the easy to program WinMax CNC Control. This unique control system allows simple conversational commands to be used, making these new machines attractive propositions for small volume and even once-off part manufacture. It also has a clear graphical display of the component and tool path as it is programmed.
Although the control can handle any company’s ISNC code and macro programming as standard, there is no need to employ people with special G-code skills, as anyone with a little turning knowledge can quickly and easily become a competent operator of the machines.
Hurco has also recently established a local operation Hurco South Africa, incorporated with local company Cutts Machine Tools. Visitors to Electra Mining Africa will be able to view the local Hurco and Cutts Machine Tools ranges at the company’s stand.

On the pipes side, Herrenknecht has developed a new method called Direct Pipe, which it will be showcasing at this year’s Electra Mining Africa exhibition. The method, which combines the advantages of the established Microtunnelling method and Horizontal Directional Drilling technology, pulls together a string of prefab pipes in only one step.
The new Direct Pipe method allows the trenchless jacking of a prefab pipe in one step with concurrent excavation of the drill hole. Similar to Pipe Jacking, the excavation of the soil is carried out with a Herrenknecht Micromachine. The navigable Micromachine conveys the excavated material via a slurry circuit above ground. The prefab pipe is pushed forward by the Herrenknecht Pipe Thruster. The pipe transmits the thrust force, required for drilling, to the cutterhead.
SONNTAG Baugesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, based in Dörth in the Hunsrück region, is the first company worldwide using this technology and are very satisfied with the drilling method as it is not only cheaper than established methods, but it also saves time.

World premiere for Herrenknecht Direct Pipe
Herrenknecht has developed a new method called Direct Pipe, which combines the advantages of the established Microtunnelling method and Horizontal Directional Drilling technology. A string of prefab pipes is pulled in with only one step.
KG used the new Direct Pipe method to lay a 464m long steel casing for a water pipeline, as well as power and telecommunication cables beneath the Rhine River near Worms, Germany. Breakthrough occurred only 13 days after the beginning of the construction work.
SONNTAG Baugesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, based in Dörth in the Hunsrück region, is the first company worldwide using this technology. The engineering firm de la Motte & Partner GmbH based in Reinbek near Hamburg, Germany was in charge of engineering and technical assistance of the construction project in Worms; contracted by the Wormsbased EWR Netz GmbH. A 464m long culvert was laid underneath the Rhine River. Before the culvert construction, one of three mains for the supply of drinking water of Worms, owned by EWR Netz GmbH, had been located on the old Nibelungen Bridge. For the sake of architectural appearance, an installation of pipes on the new Rhine Bridge should be avoided this time. This is why the construction of the culvert underneath the Rhine River became necessary.
The jobsite was set up on the Hessian side of the Rhine River between the flood protection dam and the riverbank. The Herrenknecht Utility Tunnelling Machine M-215M bored its way through the Rhine riverbed at a maximum depth of 10m. Geological formations consisting of silt, sand and gravel were crossed at a maximum pressure of 1.5bar. The Herrenknecht Pipe Thruster provided the required push force. The Pipe Thruster pushed the 464m long steel pipe (48’’ / Ø 1.20m) with a maximum force of 500t. The steel casing, consisting of 11m long pipe sections, was welded together on the jobsite.
The Project Manager of SONNTAG Baugesellschaft mbH & Co. KG Klaus Borniger is very satisfied with the evolution of the project, “This drilling method is not only cheaper than established methods, it also saves time. The increase in know-how will allow us to continue our role as competence bearer and trendsetter in the trenchless construction market and enable us to offer our customers even more efficient and environment-friendly solutions,” he says.

The John Deere engine factory in Saran, France recently produced its 2 millionth diesel engine. The milestone two millionth engine is a 6068H non-emission regulated model, which was sent to New Way, John Deere’s long-standing engine distributor in South Africa, and is displayed in the reception area of their Johannesburg headquarters.
“It is entirely appropriate that our two millionth engine should go to South Africa, where our non-certified engines are being integrated into gensets to help meet the huge demand for electricity in that country, particularly in remote locations,” comments Pierre Guyot, Managing Director John Deere Saran factory.
Saran factory has been producing engines since 1965 and currently has a production capacity of 100.000 engines per year. Originally concentrated on the supply of engines for John Deere agricultural and industrial equipment, John Deere Saran began to provide engines to OEMs from the mid 90s. The non-captive production gradually took off, moving from around 3,000 units in 1994 to some 55,000 in 2007. According to Pierre Guyot, expanding from internal sales to working closely with OEMs was essential to Saran factory growth. “We invest in getting to know OEM markets, understanding their needs, and then developing a wide range of engine types to meet those requirements.”
John Deere engine distributor for 10 years, New Way has experienced a dramatic increase of its engine sales during those 2 last years, mainly for generator set applications, due to the recurrent lack of energy resources in South African countries.

New movement and surveying radar unveiled
Reutech Radar Systems has recently unveiled a modern long-range movement and surveying radar, the MSR 300.
“When we decided to improve the MSR 200’s range performance, we did not want to exclude existing users from the new benefits. We achieved this by ensuring that any MSR 200 can be upgraded at the user’s site within a day,” says Jan de Beer, head of Reutech Mining. “By fitting a slightly larger antenna and replacing some of the sub-systems, the MSR 200 system achieves full MSR 300 status within a few hours. This advantage allows users to utilise the MSR 200 for applications of 1200m or less, and once their range requirements increase beyond this, they can easily upgrade to the extended-range MSR 300 configuration,” continues de Beer.
“The MSR 200 and MSR 300 are well differentiated in price and performance and offer our clients the best value for money for their specific needs,” says James Verster, CEO of Reutech Radar Systems.

The completion of the piazza at the New National Library in Pretoria is a milestone in the design and supply of 5000 of the unique Buzon pedestals used for all types of raised floors, terraces, pedestrian areas, timber decks and similar applications. The Buzon pedestal system is one of the leading systems for the construction of raised floors and terraces, with a proven track record – having been used in more than 25 countries around the world, and gained an impressive list of international references as well as local projects.
Those completed in SA this year alone include a wooden deck at the Bluebird Shopping Centre, Melrose; a wooden tile deck at the Gordon Institute of Business Science, Hyde Park; travertine tiles at the Michelangelo Towers in Sandton, as well as the concrete pavers of the New National Library in Pretoria.
All local designs have been undertaken by Rhoms Timberworld in conjunction with Buzon International, and pedestals can be supplied for the clients own installation after training by Rhoms Timberworld. Alternatively a turnkey design, supply and installation service is offered by the company.
The Buzon pedestal system offers many advantages to architects and end-users, including being fully adjustable for all heights from a minimum of 17mm to a maximum of 620mm. The Buzon pedestals with a top surface area of 190cm² are unique.
The system also offers the architect the possibility to use any type of decking material – natural stone tiles, ceramic tiles, wooden tiles, industrial gratings or timber decking. The architects also have the freedom to specify the width of the space between the tiles used. This unique feature is useful when the same space between the tiles on the terrace and the tiles on the walls is requested.
The pedestals can be easily installed on almost any type of substrate – roofing membranes, insulation boards, cement screed and so forth. The pedestals are supported by a base of area 320 cm² which allows installation directly on top of all types of roofing membranes and even directly on top of insulation panels.
By using the unique and patented PH-5 slope compensation device, the pedestals can compensate for a slope of 0-5%, with a result that the terrace or raised floor will always be perfectly level. At the same time, by having the possibility to specify a slope of up to 5% for the substrate below, superior drainage and improved durability of the water proofing are obtained.
The Buzon pedestals are equipped with a safety system so that a minimum of three ribs are always inserted into each other, ensuring a high stability and safe application of the terrace or raised floor.
Each part of the system uses a minimum thickness of 5mm polypropylene, so that the pedestals can withstand a load of up to 1000 kg/pedestal. Also of great importance is the ability to pick up tiles under installation, allowing access to the waterproof surface, service conduits or other items hidden from view under the floor surface.
They also provide ease of drainage, which means that puddeling is avoided on the floor surface, because all the drainage immediately passes to the waterproofed surface for rapid water removal.

Drivers go digital
Semikron has unveiled a new IGBT driver generation. The new driver SKYPER 52 is based on fully digital signal processing, allowing for the transmission of isolated sensor signals and individual protection level settings. This means that development engineers can do away with costly discrete isolated circuits. The result is fewer system components and improved overall system reliability.
Differential digital signal processing not only provides numerous technical advantages but also ensures a high level of signal integrity and hence high noise rejection. With the digital driver SKYPER 52, switching characteristics, shut down levels, as well as error processing can be set to meet the given application requirements. In other words, this driver is a unique flexible IGBT driver.
Digital signal processing does not depend on the component parameters, is highly robust and is unaffected by temperature fluctuations or the affects of ageing. For development engineers this means flexibility with the driver circuitry properties and, consequently, the control settings for the power electronics, which can be adapted to meet the individual needs.
If an error is detected, all of the power transistors can be switched off either individually or sequentially. Overvoltage’s, especially those that occur in short-circuit turn-off conditions, are reduced by the IGBT driver. To do so, the driver switches the power transistor smoothly. This is possible thanks to intelligent turn-off control. Furthermore, with the new graphic Generic User Interface, Semikron customers can enjoy the benefits of a user-friendly configuration platform that can run on Linux, Mac OS X or Windows systems. "The changeover to a digital driver means we can now give our customers all the benefits of digital technology in combination with the unmatched properties of our IGBT drivers," explains Markus Hermwille, Senior Product Manager of the Electronics division at Semikron.
The digital driver SKYPER 52 is RoHS compliant and suitable for 1200 V and 1700 V IGBT modules. It has two 9W output channels and a peak gate current of up to 50 A, making it suitable for parallel connected IGBT modules with a total current of up to 9,000A. SKYPER 52 is also suitable for high-frequency applications that require high driver output power and switching frequencies (up to 100 kHz). The insulation voltage is 4 kV and the turn-off voltage -15 V. The rugged LVDS-compatible and hence differential signal inputs and outputs correspond with the 3.3 V and 5 V I/O standards. The driver circuit can therefore be directly connected to a micro-controller or DSP without level conversion.
Semikron is the market leader in the field of diode/thyristor modules, enjoying a 34% share of the worldwide market. Semikron’s product range consists of 21,000 different power semiconductors, including chips, discrete diodes/thyristors, power modules (IGBT / MOSFET / diode / thyristor), driver and protection components and integrated subsystems.
