A proud moment for SA Glass and Aluminium industries

The opening of the first ever Glass and Aluminium exhibition and Glass Conference in Africa, at Glass Expo Africa 2008, saw the culmination of over 18 months of work with the support of the entire industry making it achievable. Speaking at the show, which co-located with leading industry related trade shows Interbuild Africa, Plumbdrain Africa, and Woodpro Africa, Chairman of the Glass Expo Steering Committee, and originator of the idea to have a local glass expo, Steve McCoy said that it was truly a proud moment for the local glass and aluminium industry to have produced a world-class exhibition that the entire continent could be proud of. It was an example to the wider building industry to show what can be done if all the industry players come together in support of an idea, and was a showcase for all the businesses in the industry, including some smaller players who often do not get the opportunity to showcase their products.

“The exhibition produced many positive spin-offs for the industry, including the Glass Conference that brought together not only glass and aluminium companies, but the architects and engineers that use their products in the building industry, providing an important opportunity to improve relationships between these different sectors of the building industry,” says McCoy.

These relationships become very important considering that the building industry – which is the largest producer of gas emissions worldwide - is having to become committed to reducing energy consumption. Windows and other glass applications have been targeted as a major energy reduction opportunity in residential and commercial buildings. “The local glass industry is now able to provide many of these advanced energy efficient products, and so architects and engineers can now start to employ them in their building designs,” explains McCoy.

Glass Expo Africa 2008 was officially opened in true African style to the accompaniment of Field Band Londu Lusha from Springs. The band is part of a youth development programme sponsored by PG Glass, and is made up of local youth between the ages of 5 and 21 years old. Nationally there are over 3500 children participating in this programme in 27 different groups around the country.

The keynote speaker at the event, Chairman of the PG Group Ronnie Lubner, congratulated the local industry for producing a world-class exhibition. He also took the opportunity to challenge the local industry to work to increase local glass consumption in line with international glass usage standards. He also challenged the industry to work together to train and develop people in order to deal with the skills shortage facing the industry today.

One of the highlights of Glass Expo Africa 2008 was the presence of Master Glazier, Frank Ruzicka at the Bohle AG stand. Ruzicka, who is based at the Bohle headquarters in Europe, was at the show to demonstrate thick glass cutting techniques as well as UV bonding. Ruzicka also conducted seminars during the week for some of Bohle’s local clients. The seminars included the principals of thick glass cutting and processing, and UV bonding, which is a process to glue glass to any material using UV glue which is cured using a UV lamp, and produces a bond with 2,6 k/mm˛ strength. As there is currently no Master Glazier in South Africa, the presence of this caliber of professional at Glass Expo Africa 2008 was a significant development. A Master Glazier is someone who has reached the highest level as a glazier and is regarded as a professional in their field.

Plumber Registration and Inspection Service gets Minister’s support at leading trade show, opening today

Plumbdrain Africa, opening this week at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, NASREC, alongside The Star Interbuild Africa, Sani’ter, Glass Expo Africa and Woodpro Africa, has announced that an exciting and informative plumbing industry breakfast will take place at the Expo Centre on Friday, where honoured guest Mrs Lindiwe Hendricks, the Minister of the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry, will present a keynote address in support of the launch of the exciting new Plumber Registration and Inspection Service.

An IOPSA initiative, the Minister will highlight the benefits of this new service, which is of huge importance in the protection of consumers.

“It’s an industry breakthrough,” says Rory Macnamara of the Pipe Trades Media Group. “Although it remains a voluntary service, it has received exceptional support, which reflects how the whole industry is pulling together for the benefit of the consumer.”

The President of IOPSA together with the Chairman of the Plumber Registration and Inspection Committee and the Chairman of the IOPSA Technical Committee will be at the breakfast fielding any questions.

Also speaking at the breakfast, from the USA, J Peters, Executive Director of Plumbing Mechanical and Fuel Gas (PMG) for the International Code Council, speaking on international plumbing standards and codes, and, also from the USA, Russ Chaney, Managing Director of the IAPMO Group (International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials), discussing the link and benefits of working with the World Plumbing Council (WPC) both as a country and as an industry.

In support of skills development, the Plumbing for Health and Safety workshops and Glass Expo Africa conference, both being held this week on Thursday, will also bring international expertise to the fore.

The Plumbing workshops will cover topics such as plumbing materials and difficulties experienced, SABS certification standards, latest legislation and how it affects all members of the plumbing sector, and an overview of alternative energy sources including gas, solar and green plumbing. The cost for each workshop session is R 68,40 per person, and to attend the breakfast is R136.80 per person. Interested parties should contact Pipe Trades Media Group at 011 579 4940.

The Glass Expo Africa conference is a first for South Africa, with major international players in the glass industry speaking to delegates about the latest trends and developments in Energy Efficiency and Glass. Architects, Quantity Surveyors and Property Developers are encouraged to attend, with the South African Institute of Architects having assessed and validated this as a Category 1 CPD Activity, which carries a 1 CPD credit. Cost to attend is R969 per person and interested parties should contact Gwen Watkins at gwen@freelancers.co.za for registration details.

Copper Tubing Africa (CTA) will showcase its training trailers on this years’ Plumbdrain Africa 2008 exhibition stand, demonstrating how these trailers are normally used on-site to assist plumbers with any problems they may be experiencing with an installation.

“Visitors also get to see daily demonstrations on the different joining procedures, which will be held regularly every day with experts on hand to answer queries from plumbers, architects and specifiers,” says CTAs Lennie da Silva.

“We’ll also be sharing research findings that provide yet another reason to choose copper piping for your plumbing system,” says da Silva. “It has been proven that copper has anti-microbial properties.  Due to this natural ability to kill unwanted bacteria that comes into contact with copper, the inside of a copper tube does not get a biofilm build-up. Unlike other materials used in plumbing today, copper does not grow bacteria and assists in killing bacteria in your water.”

The Star Interbuild Africa and co-locating shows take place from 23 – 26 July at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, NASREC, Gauteng.

Glass Expo Africa showcases latest architectural designs and trends

A new concept for the industry, Glass Expo Africa, co-locating with well-established trade exhibitions Interbuild Africa, Plumbdrain Africa and Woodpro Africa, opened its doors to visitors this week with the latest architectural designs and trends on show and celebrates its Official Opening on Thursday in Hall 8 at 11h00, with keynote guest speaker Mr. Ronnie Lubner, Chairman of the PG Group, accompanied by the PG Field Band.

With the glass and aluminium industries pulling together to make it an outstanding success, this is the first time that this exhibition has ever been done, and, says Rosiland Nash, Exhibition Manager at Specialised Exhibitions, organisers of the show, “It’s an exciting platform for key industry players to showcase latest products, trends and technologies, and a forum for discussion for the latest in overseas developments that will impact South Africa to meet the increasing legislative requirements in this country.”

Held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, NASREC, from 23 – 26 July, visitors are able to interact with top industry experts in all aspects of the industry and are seeing many new products and services.

“There are so many different architectural uses of glass overseas such as glass staircases in Europe and glass pool fences in Australia, and we want to let South African’s know the latest trends in design,” says Steve McCoy, owner of McCoy’s Glass Wholesalers and a leading driver of this initiative together with other industry colleagues.  “Frameless showers have become increasingly popular in SA, and many other great designs are waiting to be exposed. We need to start upselling and expanding our current boundaries.”

“New laws will soon be coming into effect regarding emissions and the ozone layer. Saving energy in South Africa will be of paramount importance and the increase of the use of glass and embracing double glazing will be key choices,” says McCoy. “Glass Expo Africa is an excellent showcase for these concepts and ideas.”

Gerber Goldschmidt Group SA asks the question:  How far is the difference between average temperatures today and during the last ice age?

Scientists tell us that a temperature difference of just a few degrees can make all the difference to our planet.  In fact five degrees Celsius is the difference between average temperatures today and during the last ice age.  Furthermore, a rise of another five degrees would transform the entire physical and human geography of our planet.

Climate change and global warming have become the key issues of the 21st century.  The International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook projection currently suggests that unless the world changes its ways, CO2 emissions will almost double by 2050.

The building sector globally is responsible for 40% of total gas emissions ahead of both transport (32%) and industry (28%).  Heating and air conditioning account for up to 70% of a buildings total energy costs and CO2 emissions.  Glass has a major role to play here.  Over half of all the energy consumed in buildings for heating, hot water, air conditioning, and lighting can be halved by simply insulating them.

Exhibiting at Glass Expo Africa, the Gerber Goldschmidt Group SA will be focussing on Window technology, which has improved dramatically in recent years, with the net result of lowering energy costs, and buildings with solar control glass that can save approximately 10% - 15% on general heating and cooling bills, as well as other aspects of energy features for windows including multiple layers of glazing, thickness of air space between the double-glazed panes of glass, tinted glass coatings to reduce heat gain through windows.

National Glass are positioning Insulated Glass units as a major trend for years to come, with many benefits and functions including the controlling of heat and cold transfer through windows, the reduction of sound transmission, increased wind loading resistance, minimising the formation of condensation on glass, and increasing safety and security. On display are various units such as clear float, reflective float, laminated and obscure, as well as the Eagle range of Aluminium products including patio doors, side and top lights, casement windows, palace sliding doors, hinged entrance doors and showers, all manufactured to accommodate Insulated Glass.

Rene Turck & Associates is showcasing its superior line of anti-bandit resistant products and range of PVB bullet resistant glass, as well as glass floors and double-glazed glass units, which have been designed to improve the thermal insulating properties of window glazing and reduce heat loss through a window by up to 50% compared to normal glazing.

The quality of structural sealants can make or break glazing installations and “Structural glazing is a high performance application and not all silicone sealants are suitable for this application,” says Doug Richards, Technical Consultant for A.B.E Construction Chemicals, sole South African technical distributor for the respected Dow Corning range of structural glazing sealants, insulating glass, instant glaze (hot melt) and road seals, and exhibitor at Glass Expo Africa. “And only silicone sealants which have been developed and tested specifically for structural glazing applications should be used. “

Another energy saver, and a solution to the ever-threatening rolling blackouts, is solar energy. Solar water heating technology is a cost-effective option to reduce electricity consumption by 40%-60%; in industrial applications the savings are even higher. On show at Glass Expo Africa, SolarSpace imports first-rate solar water heating systems from Germany offering products that are highly efficient, SABS approved with outstanding test results, attractive to look at and have a ten-year warranty.

“Germany is the leading country worldwide in solar technology,” says Ralf Markmann, Managing Director of SolarSpace. “We provide our customers with extensive experience and comprehensive advice. The systems are maintenance-free and have a lifespan of 25+ years and the best of all, the Sun never sends a bill.”

Glass Expo Africa is endorsed by industry Associations SAGGA and AAAMSA.

On show tomorrow, innovations in building industry leading towards 2010

With massive works expected of it over the next few years in the lead up to the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, the country’s building industry is experiencing major growth and seeing new innovations, technologies and trends being adopted and specified across a broad range of projects.

Opening this week at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, NASREC, leading trade shows Interbuild Africa, Plumbdrain Africa, Sani’ter, Glass Expo Africa and Woodpro Africa are ideally placed to showcase the latest in products, technologies, trends and innovations, covering the full spectrum of related industries in residential, commercial and industrial development.

“The shows, open from Wednesday through to Saturday this week, offer visitors the perfect opportunity to compare products and services, plan future capital equipment purchases and view the latest technology and industry trends,” says Gary Corin, Marketing Director at Specialised Exhibitions, organisers of the show.

New innovations are sure to be run-away successes at the shows including Bosun Brick’s new range of unique reflective pavers and kerbs that use an inventive cement-based formulation, where the white, yellow or red coloured reflective surface is a permanent integral part of the manufactured units and, apart from occasional cleaning, is maintenance-free. On conventional road surfaces, specialist paints or thermoplastic materials are usually used for road markings, such as lane markings, pedestrian crossings, directional markings, speed humps and stop lines, but these traditional forms of road markings tend to wear easily, are expensive to maintain and lack luminosity at night and in adverse weather conditions.

“One particular safety application is on road humps that, quite often, are barely visible, particularly where street lighting is poor,” says Ruth Momberg, Marketing Manager at Bosun Brick.

Pioneering ideas secured the success of winning a contract to supply all the key areas around the 2010 Soccer Stadiums and hotels with Kerblight, a unique new offering by KwikKerb Southern Africa. Another groundbreaking idea on show is from local company Gee Force, who will be promoting its exclusive Waterex atmosphere water dispenser that converts humidity in the air into drinking water.

Also brand new to market is the worlds most technologically advanced laminated veneer edging “Flexiwood”, by Veneer Tech SA, a truly South African product, which is patented and sold worldwide.

Safe working conditions along with financial savings is the USP for SAFI SRL. Thanks to an easy modular set up that enables speed of assembly and use, the mast climbing work platforms can bring savings of up to 70% on façade work, compared to traditional systems.

“Keeping safe in the building yard” is what Faresin Building Division Spa is all about. Offering formwork, elevator housings, pillars, ceiling systems and lifting consuls, the company boasts many firsts in product design, “but,” says Marilena Dalia Costa, of the company’s Export Division, “we adapt our products to the specific needs of the market, and, most importantly, keep safety in the uppermost of our minds.”

Attracting major decision makers from throughout South Africa, as well as a strong delegation from other African countries and international visitors, the exhibitions provide a platform for buying and specifying, and also for developing and stimulating growth opportunities for business.

As says Quantlitong Pipes MD Hong Cao, “We are looking forward to the opportunity to make contact with new clients, distributors and agencies and source new export opportunities at this year’s Interbuild Africa exhibition.”

New trends, new products, new technology at Woodpro 2008

Make your way out to the Johannesburg Expo Centre at NASREC this week to view the latest trends, new products and technology with companies such as Geerlings, Woodtech Specialist Machinery and VWM Woodworking Machinery on show with daily demonstrations and industry updates.

Woodpro Africa co-locates with leading industry trade shows Interbuild Africa, Plumbdrain Africa and the exciting new Glass Expo Africa, together providing a platform for the full industry to showcase latest industry developments.

With massive works expected of it over the next few years in the lead up to the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup, the country’s building services and construction industry remains in a growth phase, even with the current downturn of the economy, and is under much pressure for on-time completion.

“Pressure remains right across the building services and construction industry, including the woodworking sector, and deadlines are tough,” says Rosiland Nash, Exhibition Manager, Specialised Exhibitions, organisers of Woodpro Africa. “But business also needs to look beyond 2010 - how to sustain industry growth and expand to new markets, and not just focus on the immediate deadlines.”

“Although the current economic climate has definitely affected residential growth, the commercial and industrial sectors were still performing well,” says Nash. “It’s said that commercial and industrial construction is expected to grow by over 30% with the extra demands of 2010, governmental infrastructure spending, and private sector expansion programmes.”

This is the sentiment of exhibitors at Woodpro Africa, who are using the show as a forum for developing new business, showcasing top products and services, looking at ways to address the skills shortage, and providing a vital networking arena for businesses.

Woodpro exhibitors come from across the woodworking industry including timber processing, woodworking machinery, complementary equipment, finishes and fittings, and furniture manufacturing supplies.

“The shows offer local and international visitors the perfect opportunity to compare products and services, plan future capital equipment purchases and view the latest technology and industry trends,” says Nash, “and we are aiming to build on the 7,700 visitors that attended our previous shows in 2006.”

The Expo Centre at NASREC itself is undergoing a construction facelift in preparation for its role as the appointed media center for the 2010 world cup, and visitors to Woodpro Africa will already benefit from some of the changes.

“The outside precinct area is looking good with paved pathways and effective street lighting,” explains Nash, “and the renovations inside offer greater comfort for visitors and exhibitors.”

Woodpro Africa 2008 takes place from 23 – 26 July at the Expo Centre, NASREC, Gauteng.

The quality of structural sealants can make or break glazing installations

“Structural glazing is a high performance application and not all silicone sealants are suitable for this application,” says Technical Consultant for A.B.E Construction Chemicals Doug Richards.

“Only silicone sealants which have been developed and tested specifically for structural glazing applications should be used,” he says.

“All Dow Corning structural glazing sealants have been granted a European Technical Approval through independent testing to European Technical Approval Guidelines, and the sealants conform to European health, safety and environmental protection legislation,” he adds.

Dow Corning sealants have been widely specified for various multi-million rand glazing projects in Southern Africa and are extensively used globally for high-rise curtain walled structures, sports stadia and roads.

Insulating glass is also used is silicone structural glazing.  The performance of insulating glass in structural glazing applications is critical due to the load, stresses and extreme environmental factors impacting the façade.  For these requirements to be fulfilled, both the construction of insulating glass units, and the manufacturing of the individual components, must meet very high quality standards.

“In addition, Dow Corning Instant Glaze window assembly is a patented, neutral-cure reactive hot-melt silicone that is ideal for automated backbedding applications, and when used with standard hot-melt dispensing equipment and automated X-Y glazing table, instant glaze becomes part of a total productivity solution which enables you to produce windows and patio doors faster, better and more economically than other technologies on the market today,” says Richards.

Dow Corning’s silicone Road Seals are also used extensively on all major road refurbishment contracts throughout South Africa.

A.B.E. Construction Chemicals is the sole South African technical distributor for the respected Dow Corning range of structural glazing sealants, insulating glass, instant glaze (hot melt) and road seals, and their range can be viewed at the company’s stand number 8A13.

New product range for residential, commercial and industrial markets

Bosun Brick, a fast growing supplier of concrete paving products, recently launched a range of new products for the residential, commercial and industrial markets. These include the Smooth Ethnic Paver, the textured Rio Rocoso Bevel and Interlocker, Grass Blocks, Versoblock retaining wall blocks, Hollow Blocks, engineering Stock Bricks and a range of unique Reflective Pavers and Kerbs. The company has the exclusive license in South Africa to manufacture and supply these products using Singapore-based ACME Paving Consultant’s reflective topping mix.

On conventional surfaces, specialist paints or thermoplastic materials are usually applied. These traditional forms of road markings tend to wear easily; are expensive to maintain and lack luminosity at night and in adverse weather conditions. Bosun Brick’s reflective pavers and kerbs offer permanent, cost-effective alternatives to traditional painted road markings, such as lane markings, pedestrian crossings, directional markings, speed humps and stop lines, to name a few.

The development of this innovative process, using a cement-based formulation, enables pavers and kerbs to be manufactured with durable and cost-effective reflective surfaces. The coloured (white, yellow or red) reflective surface, which is an integral part of the manufactured units, is permanent, and apart from occasional cleaning, maintenance-free. One particular safety application is on road humps that, quite often, are barely visible, particularly where street lighting is poor.

Bosun Brick recently commissioned three new factories that have been erected in Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and the North West Province. These factories have the most up-to-date European paver manufacturing technology (Hess technology). The significant cost of developing these plants is a further indication of the company’s commitment to the industry. All of these factories are operated according to strict quality procedures, which is why the company’s products are manufactured according to SABS standards.

These modern production facilities were designed to manufacture in excess of 120 000 pavers per day at each factory, which brings the total production of Bosun Brick nationally to over half a million SABS approved pavers on a daily basis. Bosun takes particular pride in its technology partners. The Hess Group, based in Germany, supplies the main component of the operation, being the state-of-the-art block-making machine, while locally Birkenmayer supplies Eirich mixers to Bosun. These mixers are able to deliver a superior quality mix in the shortest possible time.

Bosun Brick was established in 1993 and is a member of both the Concrete Manufacturers Association and the Gauteng Master Builders Association.

Training trailers bring on-site assistance to plumbers faced with installation problems

Copper Tubing Africa (CTA) will showcase its training trailers on this years’ Plumbdrain Africa 2008 exhibition stand, demonstrating how these trailers are normally used on-site to assist plumbers with any problems they may be experiencing with an installation.

Visitors also get to see daily demonstrations on the different joining procedures, which will be held regularly every day with CTA’s experts on hand to answer queries from plumbers, architects and specifiers.

“We’ll also be showcasing our newest product and demonstrating how this new solder less bonding system, known as “Just for Copper,” joins copper tubing in seconds,” says CTAs Lennie da Silva.  Pressure rated to 500 psi, the “Just-For-Copper” system bonds when the tube is wet or dry.  It is available in 50ml and 10ml applicator bottles and is packaged with a 60-grit emery cloth to clean the tube and connector before applying the liquid bond.

“Recent research has provided yet another reason to choose copper piping for your plumbing system,” says da Silva.

CTA is a producer of copper tube, multi-channel tube and fittings. You can visit the CTA stand at Plumbdrain Africa 2008 stand number 6A16.

FMI

Income protection specialists looking after industry small business

Anyone who owns a small business or works on a commission basis can appreciate the importance of ensuring that a constant income is available to the business.  In the case of most small businesses, income is largely generated by the business owner/entrepreneur themselves.  Interestingly, most business owners place a large emphasis on protecting their business premises, assets and medical expenses but forget about the most important asset, their own ability to earn an income.

FMI’s income protection provides monthly payments during a period when you are unable to work due to sickness, accident or injury. The company’s income protection products are split into Temporary Income Protection (TIP), which provides cover for up to the first 24 months of disability and Permanent Income Protection (PIP), which can dovetail with the TIP benefit to provide uninterrupted cover until the selected age of retirement.

FMI’s income protection differs from traditional capital disability cover as you receive monthly payments, not a lump sum amount. Income protection also means that you don’t have to be permanently disabled to qualify. Often it is these shorter periods of disability where the financial burden of not receiving an income could cause tremendous damage to your business and personal finances. An illness such as meningitis, for instance, could cause temporary incapacitation for up to three months. Additionally, by receiving monthly payments, you are able to continue paying your other insurance premiums such as your medical aid, which is normally critical during these testing times.

These income protection products are ideally suited to:
• Business owners
• Entrepreneurs
• Professionals
• Commission earners
• Franchisees

FMI has been operating in the income protection sector for over 13 years with a focus on temporary income protection. The company’s experience in this niche area has enabled it to provide clients with innovative and competitively priced income protection products.

How far between average temperatures today and during the last ice age

Window technology has improved dramatically in recent years, with the net result of lowering your energy costs. Buildings with solar control glass can save approximately 10% - 15% on general heating and cooling bills. Some of the important energy features of windows include:

Multiple layers of glazing – Double-glazing insulates almost twice as well as single glazing.

Thickness of air space - With double-glazed windows the air space between the panes of glass has a big effect on energy performance. A very thin air space does not insulate as well as a thicker air space because of the conductivity through that small space.

Tinted glass coatings - Tinted glass has long been used in commercial buildings to reduce heat gain through windows. Improved, lightly tinted windows are becoming more common for the commercial market in southern (cooling dominated) climates. The new glazings reduce solar heat gain without reducing visibility as much as older tinted glass.

Low E coatings - Thin, transparent coatings of silver or tin oxide permit visible light to pass through, but they effectively reflect infrared heat radiation back into the room. This reduces the loss of cool air in summer and heat loss through the windows in winter.

AGC Flat Glass Europe, one of the world leaders in the manufacture of high performance architectural glass, offers brilliant solar control and energy efficient glass solutions. The Gerber Goldschmidt Group is the official agent for AGC Flat Glass Europe, and has been the importer of these products for over ten years. Well-established AGC glass products in the South African market include the following:

  • Stopsol (solar control with various reflective coatings).
  • Sunergy (solar control with low-E and low reflectivity)
  • Stopray (high performance SIGU)
  • Matleux (decorative acid etched glass)
  • Mirox (new generation ecological mirror)

Come and see these and more at the Gerber Goldschmidt Group stand at this year’s Glass Africa Expo.
