PRESS RELEASES PROPAK CAPE 2008

14 - 16 October, The Cape Town International Convention Centre

Bumper show expected for our exhibitors and visitors

Opening next week, the Propak Cape exhibition takes place from 14-16 October at the world-class Cape Town International Convention Centre.

Latest trends, innovations, products and business opportunities will be showcased at Propak Cape 2008, highlighting once again the show’s stature as the ultimate showcase for the packaging, food processing, plastics, print and labelling industries.

Propak Cape will provide local and international visitors an opportunity to meet with exhibitors face to face within an environment created for trading, sourcing of products, education and awareness across the entire spectrum of the combined industries.

Packaging faces complex changes but solutions on show at Propak Cape

The South African packaging industry faces some complex challenges at present. Firstly, to provide safe and nutritious food to millions of South Africans spread out all over the country, while achieving world-class standards for the export market, as well as complying with stringent environmental demands.

Packaging is an essential part of modern life allowing us to consume fresh, uncontaminated food and beverages wherever we want in the quantities we desire. Modern living has driven the desire for convenience foods in ready to prepare and single serve formats and this pre-preparation ultimately reduces the possible amount of solid food waste generated by households.

The World Health Organisation estimates that, without effective packaging, developing countries would lose up to 50% of their produce before it reaches consumers, making packaging a vital sector in any economy. However, once it has performed its very important function, packaging becomes cumbersome waste. Packaging does not contribute to the national waste stream as much as you would assume. In fact, it makes up less than 0.1% of total waste generated in South Africa, including air and water waste, and accounts for some 12% of household waste by volume.

In response to the waste caused by packaging, sub-sectors of the local packaging industry have begun forming a variety of organisations dedicated to increasing the collection and recycling of their products, thereby creating a new resource out of this waste, which can be reused.

In addition to these collection, recycling and reusing initiatives, the local packaging industry, valued at R31-billion per annum, is also at the cutting edge of the development of new energy efficient and environmentally friendly products and equipment.

Many of these new cutting edge products and innovations will be on show at this years Propak Cape 2008 exhibition in Cape Town in October, highlighting once again the show’s stature as the ultimate showcase for the packaging, food processing, plastics, print and labelling industries.

One such example of new innovative and energy efficient packaging products to be launched at the show is the Robatech fully insulated adhesive applicator head for hotmelts, with proven safety record and energy savings of up to 60%. The applicator head's full insulation protects the machine operator from injuries on touching of the head. It also helps save energy because the glue temperature remains constant over long periods of time.

Artec is another local company introducing new environmentally conscious products into the local packaging market. Showcasing the Artec 105 DV recycling line at the show, this new generation plant is equipped with the latest technology infrared heating, which gives an energy saving of approximately 7-8%, and is possibly the lowest Kilo/Watt per kilogram available on the market today.

Beswick Machinery’s new affordable Titan ER 610 Slitter Rewinder is very simple to operate and maintain, yet it features all the main benefits normally associated with much more expensive Slitter Rewinders.

Packing solutions provider, Ishida Europe, will showcase its expertise in weighing, packing and quality control. Latest models on show include the Atlas snack food bagmaker, which works in conjunction with the company’s market leading CCW-R multihead weigher, a new entry-level tray sealer, and an innovative X-ray inspection system alongside Ishida’s top selling checkweigher range.

Plastics will also feature strongly with a range of plastics processing machinery, in addition to food processing equipment and related machinery and other specific equipment needs for the chemical, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries.

There will also be a strong focus on the labelling and print markets with bar coding, labelling printers and labelling machines.

Examples include the launch of Pyrotecs new Markem-Imaje range of coders for primary secondary and tertiary coding and labelling equipment. The company’s PackMedia division also provides an exciting concept-to-application service to its clients, providing innovative solutions to the problem of having too much information to get on a label and not enough space to put it all.

HG Molenaar will also be exhibiting the first machine of the new line of ink jet coding platforms – the VJ1510 machine. First launched at the Interpak show in Germany, this will be the first time that the new machine will be available to the local market.

In addition, Kear Graphic Supplies will be launching the new Pantone uncoated colour matching system known as Goe. The company will also exhibit the new upgrade of the Pantone Q2.1 colour respectrametre at Propak Cape 2008.

Foil supplier to the packaging industry, Synchron will be launching a new cold foil with over-printing capabilities, which it will be exhibiting at the show.

Taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 14 – 16 October 2008, Propak Cape has the support of The Institute of Packaging in SA, The Packaging Council of South Africa, The Printing Industries Federation of South Africa,

The Flexographic Technical Association of South Africa and the Plastics Federation of South Africa. The World Packaging Organisation will be holding its annual international meetings alongside Propak Cape at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, bringing key global players together to discuss industry trends and developments. This at a time when the local packaging industry is growing due to higher consumer demand for packaged goods, higher crop yields and an increase in exports.

Additional value-add will be the breakfast seminar organised by The Institute of Packaging in SA Western Cape branch co-locating with Propak Cape on 14 October, the Institute of Packaging Gold Pack Student Awards Banquet highlighting work of excellence completed by students, and also the World Packaging Organisation meeting, attracting industry professionals from around the world.

Propak Cape to host latest trends and innovation

A range of latest trends, innovations and opportunities is anticipated at Propak Cape 2008, highlighting once again the show’s stature as the ultimate showcase for the packaging, food processing, plastics, print and labelling industries.

The show takes place from 14-16 October at the world-class Cape Town International Convention Centre.  Propak Cape is organised by Specialised Exhibitions, South Africa’s leading business-to-business organiser.

Exhibition Manager, Michelle Bedser, says space at the show is almost sold out, and that visitors can once again expect to be exposed to the latest and the best of what this innovative industry can produce.

“Due to exhibitor demand we have increased available floor space over the previous show and currently the show is 25% bigger than in 2005,” Bedser says, “and we are still receiving enquiries for space. Exhibitors are choosing larger stands than in previous shows, based on success achieved in 2005 and to accommodate the new machinery and equipment that will be on view this year.”

“Many of our exhibitors, having been exposed to international shows Interpack and Drupa this year, want to bring the information regarding new products and innovations, further developments and new fields of business to Propak Cape so that local companies and those who couldn’t attend internationally can also benefit.”

Visitors are also expressing interest in the show this year, with response from companies in Africa to information received on the show and invitations to attend.

“International attendance at the previous show was high,” says Bedser, “and we anticipate the same or more this year.”

"Propak Cape 2008 will be the most powerful marketing vehicle for the broad industry it represents," she says, “as this is where both local and international companies will be able to discuss global trends and technology as well as source products and network."

As a major exporter of fruit, wine, vegetables, flowers and other valuable commodities to international markets, the Western Cape is heavily reliant on the packaging industry in realising the country’s export potential and the region’s all-important stake in earning valuable foreign exchange. It is essential that fresh produce is properly packaged to ensure its safe and undamaged arrival and this market would not bring such high returns without proper packaging as the packaging stops waste.

“This is a further reason for the success of the show,” explains Bedser, “as it highlights the latest in packaging trends, key to the success in exporting.”

Propak Cape will provide local and international companies with an opportunity to market their products and services to thousands of influential decision makers, and will create an environment for trading, sourcing of products, education and awareness across the entire spectrum of the combined industries.

Exhibitors were excited about the turnout of visitors in 2005, with Malcolm Turner of Precision Belting stating, “an excellent show with many knowledgeable decision makers attending”, and Berni Janssen of Levy & Smith/Starpak saying, “It’s good to see new faces, people I have not met before as that is what the exhibitors had come here for.”

Christine Pieterse, Sales Manager at ADE Labelling and Barcoding said “it was an absolutely wonderful show and so well organised. It is the best show we have exhibited at and wish it happened twice a year! We generated plenty of new business and got fantastic leads.”

Robin Rigney, Sales Director of Consupaq was also impressed, saying, “The show was extremely well organised and well attended. It was an ideal opportunity to interact with our target market and good for our exposure in this region.”

Vanessa Bowes, Marketing Manager at Robatech SA, echoed this, "The show attracted an extremely large crowd of visitors and exhibitors, allowing Robatech SA to network with exhibitors and potential clients on a daily basis. The Propak show is definitely one of the most successful and well-attended exhibitions in SA. An exciting show with plenty of vibe, new innovations and technology, a packaging paradise designed to fill all your needs!"

On display will be a wide spectrum of products and services covering the process from converting equipment, packaging material, containers and components, packaging and ancillary machinery, to end of line handling including marking, coding, labelling, taping and printing.

World Packaging Organisation alongside regional packaging show

The World Packaging Organisation will be holding its annual international meetings alongside Propak Cape at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in October 2008, bringing key global players together to discuss industry trends and developments. This at a time when the local packaging industry is growing due to higher consumer demand for packaged goods, higher crop yields and an increase in exports.

This industry growth is reflected in the exhibition sales for Propak Cape, a trade exhibition focusing on packaging, food processing, plastics, printing and labelling. With eight months to go, floor space sold to-date exceeds that of the previous show in 2005, and is at 70% capacity of total space available for 2008.

“We are expecting floor space to be sold out completely by June and have been overwhelmed by the response,” says John Knocker, Exhibition Director, Propak Cape. “Packaging and labelling are important aspects on the show, and we are speaking to more companies involved in food processing as this is big business in the Cape.”

“The exhibition is set to create a powerful platform bringing together buyers and sellers in these market sectors.  It’s an extremely successful regional event, combining all elements of packaging and related industries and provides a powerful marketing vehicle for the broad industry it represents.”

Taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 14 – 16 October 2008, Propak Cape is further supported by a full programme of conferences running alongside the exhibition, focusing on topical issues that will be of benefit to those involved in these industry sectors.

Regional packaging show sees major growth for 2008

With sales already exceeding 50% of available floor space and with almost twelve months still to go, Propak Cape 2008 is set for major growth, already showing a comparative increase of 25% over the previous show held in 2005.

Showcasing the latest in packaging, food processing, printing, labelling and plastics, the exhibition is set to create a powerful platform bringing together buyers and sellers in these market sectors.  Innovative packaging design that keeps products competitively ahead through a visual identity that communicates the right message to its consumer will also be at the forefront of the exhibition.

“An extremely successful regional event, the show combines all elements of packaging and related industries and provides a powerful marketing vehicle for the broad industry it represents," says John Knocker, exhibition director at Specialised Exhibitions, organisers of the upcoming show.

“It provides a platform from which key players in these sectors showcase their products, systems and services, and visitors know they are meeting with the leading companies servicing their industry and supplying solutions for use in the production and marketing of their products. It creates a forum where local and international exhibitors and visitors are able to discuss global trends and technologies, source products, and network with colleagues."

Taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from 14 – 16 October 2008, Propak Cape is further supported by a full programme of conferences running alongside the exhibition, focusing on topical issues that will be of benefit to those involved in these industry sectors.

Says Knocker, “The conferences will provide critical information with regards to industry trends, regulatory requirements and best practices. We urge people to attend and to benefit from this opportunity.”

A shift towards security in packaging and the growing environmental consciousness has brought about the need for balance between these concerns and those of convenience and product protection factors.

“Finding the right balance is crucial,” says Knocker, ”and solutions can be found at the show.”

The Western Cape is the perfect home for Propak Cape. As a major exporter of wine, fruit and other valuable commodities to international markets, the area is heavily reliant on the packaging and associated industries in realising the country’s export potential and the region’s all-important stake in earning valuable foreign exchange.

“Packaging is an essential element as exports from the Western Cape are big business, traditionally being dominated by primary products such as fruit, fish and vegetables accounting for 60% of regional exports. Beneficiation adds increasingly higher value,” says Knocker. “South Africa’s 300-year old wine industry, based in the south of the province, produces 3.1% of the world’s wine and ranks ninth in overall volume production.”

The show has built a good reputation in the area and provides exhibitors with an opportunity to market their products and services to thousands of influential decision makers, and will create an environment for trading, sourcing of products, education and awareness across the entire spectrum of the combined industries.

“Feedback from an independent survey conducted in 2005 clearly showed that Propak Cape was a successful event in the Cape region, mainly because it offered such a broad range of exhibitors to local visitors. With almost 6,000 visitors, over 83% had buying power and 53% stated that they would probably be placing orders within a year due to their exposure to new products and supplies at the show. Over 60% of the visitors were senior management executives, 37% of which were Managing Directors,” says Knocker.

“The survey also revealed that 47% of the visitors had met new or alternative suppliers at the show, and 44% did not usually see sales representatives from exhibiting companies.”

The exhibition will showcase converting equipment, packaging material, containers and components, packaging and ancillary machinery, through to end of line handling including marking, coding, labelling and taping.

In addition to the Cape based companies, exhibitors are drawn from all over South Africa as well as international participants. “Booked already for the 2008 show are two international pavilions, and others are showing great interest in coming on board,” says Knocker.

Propak Cape has the support of The Institute of Packaging in SA, The Packaging Council of South Africa, The Printing Industries Federation of South Africa, The Flexographic Technical Association of South Africa and the Plastics Federation of South Africa.

Robatech exhibits new Diamond applicator head at Propak Cape

The fully insulated adhesive applicator head will be on show at the Robatech stand at this years’ Propak Cape exhibition. This worldwide unique applicator head, with its full insulation, offers numerous advantages.
